The fire at Calasparra in the Sierra del Molino in Murcia continues to advance out of control and has now affected 1,000 hectares of bush and pine. It has also affected the neighbouring municipality of Cieza.
More than 350 firemen, civil guard, local police, volunteers and civil protection workers are currently fighting the flames, helped by a 300 soldiers from the UME emergency unit based in Valencia. Eight planes and seven helicopters were used to fight the blaze during Wednesday.
It’s thought that the fire was started deliberately given that two fronts started simultaneously the short distance of 6km from each other.
President of the Murcia Government, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, has visited the area where a field hospital has been installed to provide any needed medical assistance.
