The Supreme Court has asked the Guardia Civil to investigate the income of Judge Baltasar Garzón. The National Court judge is currently suspended as three different cases proceed against him in the Supreme Court. This request comes as a result of the money he allegedly collected when on a sabbatical year in New York.
The investigative judge, Manuel Marchena, wants to obtain the information on Garzón’s income for time between March 1 2005 and July 30 2006 which does not correspond to his wage as a judge in the National Court.
The case which alleges perversion of the course of justice and bribery has been brought by the lawyers, José Luis Mazón and Antonio Panea, who consider that the judge was paid more than 302,000 dollars by Banco Santander for sponsoring some talks he gave in New York University.
The Supreme Court judge said his request to the Guardia Civil was necessary given the ‘inaccuracies and contradictions’ in the case.
During his declaration on April 15, Garzón told the court he could not say exactly how much he had earned, but on Thursday he told the press that ‘the authorities only have to ask’, adding that he had not been given a ‘cent more than the stipulated’.
