Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has said that Spain will not be sending any more Guardia Civil to Afghanistan, despite a request from NATO for them to do so, although the Prime Minister added the request has been noted, saying he was aware that the training of the Afghan forces is key to the future withdrawal of foreign forces.
The Prime Minister also commented that Spain’s commitment to the mission was firm, and that Spain would stay until the mission is completed.
There are 40 Spanish Guardia Civil promised to Afghanistan, but currently only 26 are on duty there.
The request for more forces came during a visit of the NATO, General Secretary, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to Madrid on Friday.
