Four employees from the municipal services company, Elsur, spent Tuesday night in El Ejido’s San Isidro church on the first night of an indefinite protest to demand their unpaid wages. Ideal newspaper said they are owed their wages from November and December, in addition to the bonus payment for the last month of 2010.
The sit-in was preceded by a demonstration by some 50 El Sur members of staff outside the doors of the church, who told Ideal that they are owed an average of 3,800 € each.
It came after a meeting with company management on Monday failed to reach any agreement on the delayed payments. It’s understood that Elsur intends to present a layoff plan to the regional government which will affect half the 370-strong workforce.
El Ejido Town Hall has a 30% share in Elsur, and is the company’s only client. Elsur argues that financial problems are the reason for the delays in paying wages and claim to still be owed 5 million of the 15 million € annual fee from the Town Hall which was agreed for 2010.
The EFE news agency reports that some of Elsur’s staff may start a hunger strike in protest at the delays.
