A mix of stories and a smattering of the Oscars on the front pages today

El Mundo leads with revelations about the March 11th Madrid train bombings two years ago. All the media have more items as the 2 year anniversary approaches, but El Mundo claims that the ex miner called Trashorras told police that one of the main accused known as ‘El Chino’ knew the ETA activists who were arrested in Cuenca with 500 kilos of explosives.
El Pais meanwhile says that National Court Judge, Juan del Olmo, has revealed that one of his conclusions in the case, expected to start hearings in a month’s time, is that the bombings were linked to International Islamic terrorism.

El Mundo is among the papers to report that the Ministry of Health is authorising the presence of private banks of stem cells from umbilical cords in Spain. The story is in the news here since the Prince and Princess of Asturias sent blood from the umbilical cord of the Infanta Leonor to a private bank in the United States.
El Pais also gives front page space to the news.

El Mundo covers the fact that Brussels have asked Madrid to explain the obstacles facing the E.ON company. Also the paper reports that Caja Madrid has taken a further 1% in Endesa, taking their share to 10%.
ABC leads with the story and says that Brussels has given Madrid ten days to explain the measures.

El Mundo is among the papers to report the death of 45 immigrants in waters off the Canary islands. The paper says they left from Mauritania and thought they could cover the 800kms to the islands.
El Pais leads with that story and explains the deaths were on two separate boats.

El Pais has a photo of the Hamas leader, Ismail Haniya and reports that the party has revoked the special powers previously given to the Palestinian President.

El Mundo has a photo of the Catalan leaders and says that the definition of Cataluña as a nation has been approved in the Statute report. The PP voted against considering the declaration to be unconstitutional, while the Catalan party Ciu described the day as historic.
El Pais explains that the vote on the document report yesterday left eight matters pending and shortened the scope of the new Statute.
ABC leads with the story and says that the PSOE Socialist party is definitively supporting the fact that Cataluña is called a nation.
La Vanguardia says that both the PP and the ERC voted against the report yesterday.

El Periodico reports that the justice system in Barlceona was aware of the ill-treatment of the 5 year old girl in the city. The child is now in a coma and reports say she was forced to eat her own vomit.

El Mundo says the army is to triple its presence in Barcelona in 2007 which is being described as a strategic placement.

El Mundo reports that the three British climbers who have died in the Sierra Nevada did not have the adequate equipment. The claim is at odds with Tele 5 last night who reported that they were
experienced climbers and well prepared.

La Razón says that thousands of youngsters from across Spain have been arranging two massive ‘macrobotellónes’ over the Internet for march 17th in Seville and Granada.

La Razón has a photo of Reese Witherspoon.
ABC and La Razón are the only papers to put a large photo from the Oscars on the front page – ABC has the winners of best actor and actress, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Reese Witherspoon. Crash – ‘Buena noche y mejor suerte’ says the paper.
