Unemployment rose in Spain in August by 51,185 ending a run of four months of falls.
The increase is slightly lower than that seen in August 2010 when it was 61,083.
Unemployment fell only in Agriculture, down by 2,467, but increased the most in the Service sector where it rose by 37,707.
It was up in Construction by 10,392 and in Industry by 9,421.
Unemployment among those looking for their first job was down by 3,868.
There are now 4,130,927 registered unemployed in the public employment offices.
The change in tendency had been predicted by the Minister for Employment and Immigration, Valeriano Gómez. He has commented that August has become a bad month because there are ‘certain business practices’ under which contracts are rescinded and then produced again.
‘It’s a way of obtaining the holiday pay at the cost of the public employment services’ he said, adding that this type of practice is ‘being persecuted and punished’.
