The defence team in the Francisco Camps Gürtel suits case has failed in its attempts to block the phone recordings being played to the court. Included in the case summary the recordings were still dramatic when played to the jury.
On Wednesday several recordings were played, while, unlike in previous days, Francisco Camps sat still and serious. Also listening seriously to the conversations reproduced was his wife. Sat in the gallery, Isabel Bas heard how she and her husband had thanked Alvaro Pérez, the man known as El Bigotes who is at the centre of the Gürtel companies for his gifts.
It is the general tone of the recordings which shows just how friendly Camps was with the businessman who collected a large number of contracts from the Valencia Government without having to go through the usual tender procedures. In the recording El Bigotes tells Camps, ‘I love you a lot’, and Camps responds ‘Me more’. Listen here
The court was then played a recording of the PP ex General Secretary in Valencia, Ricardo Costa, calling up Álvaro Pérez to see if he and his contacts can get him 100 grams of caviar. He also asked for a Nokia N97 phone. Listen here
The chamber also heard the bosses of the Orange Market company, Alvaro Pérez and Cándido Herrero, discuss gifts for ‘the Mayor’. It seems Pérez is making the call from a Loius Vuitton boutique and it seems he is buying a bag for the Mayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá, although he is not too flattering about her, saying she does nothing for them, and that he will be spending less this year.
‘She does not give us anything’, he says, ‘she’s not useful for anything, but neither does she f**k us up’. Listen here
