A youngster, a Slovak Student on an Erasmus exchange, and three policemen are missing in the sea off the coast of A Coruña. The police had entered the water to try and rescue the youngster at the Orzán cove who had been swimming in the early hours with two friends as part of the Santo Tomás de Aquino fiestas on the beach. The two friends managed to get out of the water and raise the alarm. One of them, a Spanish student, has been admitted to hospital.
La Voz de Galicia reports that the three police went into the water at 5am this morning, and that other people managed to get out of the water safely.
A helicopter and several police vehicles and ambulances are at the scene. The A Coruña police commissioner said
‘The sea is in a tremendous condition, with waves which reach nearly to the paseo maritimo, and we have a result which could be fatal’.
The Mayor of A Coruña, Carlos Negreira, is also present.
Later this morning the body of one of the policemen was found, and the search continues for the rest amid waves which are five metres high.
