Spanish unemployment reaches 5.2 million

The EPA figure for the last quarter of 2011 has just been published

The latest data from the survey of the active population shows that there are 5.2 million unemployed. A total of 295,300 people joined the dole queues in the last quarter of 2011, taking unemployment to 22.85% in percentage terms, the highest since the first quarter of 1995 when it was 23.49%.

The number is however below that predicted by Cristóbal Montoro, the Minister for Hacienda, who said it would be 5.4 million. The final number is 5,273,600.

The number of homes where everybody is out of work has gone up to 1,570,000.

Unemployment among foreigners rose 71,500 to 1,225,800 or an unemployment rate of 34.82%.

Andalucía is the region with the highest unemployment at 31.23%, with a total of 1.2million workers out of a job at the end of 2011, followed by the Canaries with 30.93% or 341,900 unemployed.
