Judge Baltasar Garzón faces third case in the Supreme Court

This case relates to sponsorship money he received in New York during a sabttical year

Manuel Marchena, the magistrate in the Penal Hall of the Supreme Court has accused Judge Baltasar Garzón of a crime of improper bribery. It relates to the claim that he asked, and obtained, a total of 1.2 million € from important companies and Spanish banks which were paid to him to sponsor his activities at the University of New York during a sabbatical year he took between 2005 and 2006.
The claim is that he made the most of his being a judge to obtain the sponsorships.

Marchena goes on to say that although improper bribery does not necessarily mean personal enrichment, this did take place in Garzón’s case, who was paid by BBVA, Cepsa, Endesa and Telefónica.

In addition funds were paid by Banco Santander with the total amount reaching some 2.5 million dollars.

Marchena’s decision means that Garzón will be back on the accused bench of the Supreme Court in what is the third separate case against him.
