He said he had been given the hide by a friend who had found it on a rubbish tip. Zebras are protected under the CITES agreement.

A Murcia man has been taken into custody in Granada province, after Civil Guard officers found a zebra skin in his car during a routine control on the A-92N road.

He was unable to provide any proof that it had been imported into Spain legally, saying that it was a present from a friend, who had found the hide on a rubbish tip.

Zebras are protected under the CITES agreement - the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.
