Murcia-Corvera Airport set to open in 2009
By m.p. - Mar 30, 2006 - 11:11 PM

The building contract should be put out to tender this autumn. It will take 2 years to build

Corvera International Airport will be operational from 2009, according to the regional President of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, who says it will be used by one and a half million passengers during its first year of operation, although that is expected to triple in the short to mid term.
The Development Ministry approved the project for the Murcia-Corvera Airport on Wednesday, which defines its general guidelines and sets out the area needed for each separate activity, including future expansion.

The total area will be 300 hectares, with a runway of 3,000 metres. It will have five hangars, and will be able to handle seven flights every hour.
Valcárcel has confirmed that building work should start in 2007, and will take around two years to complete.

The draft project for the airport is expected to be approved this May, and the building work put out to tender in the autumn.
It will cost 107 million euros to build, with investment of another 46 million to extend the facilities once the 1.5 million passenger target has been reached.

I've just been zooming around on Google Earth trying to figure out where this is going to be built in relation to the Hacienda del Alamo development where we have a house. Not really any clues yet but it's a good way of observing any changes to the landscape. An airport at Corvera will be great...........as long as we're not on the flight path. Classic NIMBY mentality I'm afraid.

The plan in the local papers recently shows the exit from the A30 Murcia-Cartagena road to the airport will be at the current Los Martinez turn-off.

Mike Whitehead

Not sure, as yet, about flight paths, but we were on El Valle yesterday. It looks pretty good, better than Mar Menor, La Torre or Hacienda Riquelme

Thanks Mike. Do you or does anybody else know who I can contact to find out about flight paths? Surely there must be a definitive plan available for veiwing somewhere?

I've been trying to find out for ages. I was worried about La Torre. There doesn't seem to be much info about. I tried overlaying the airport plan onto a map, El Valle wasn't on the direct flight path, but you never know what the route would be. My guess would be that it would fly more or less straight from the end of the runway and meet the flightpath from Murcia. Polaris have also said that none of their resorts will be on the flight path, but....? There was a thread on EOS, I believe, but there was nothing more than I've put above.
