There has been a large demonstration in Madrid today, organised by the Association of Terrorism Victims, ATV, against the starting of talks with ETA. Several top members of the Partido Popular took part in the demonstration which lasted an hour in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid.

The demonstrators used the slogan ‘negotiation, in my name no!’ also demanded ‘the truth’ over the March 11th Madrid train bombings two years ago, convinced that ETA were also involved in some way.

There were many shouts against the government and the Prime Minister. Those from the opposition to attend included the leader of the PP, Mariano Rajoy, Secretary General Ãngel Acebes, Spokesman in Congress Eduardo Zaplana, the President of the regional government Esperanza Aguirre, and the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón.

The Mayor suffered some abuse from supports of the COPE radio presenter, Federico Jiménez Losantos, who has been insulting the mayor on air over recent days, and who now the Mayor says faces legal action as a result.
The usual war of numbers has broken out with the Madrid regional government saying ‘around a million’ took part, while the police put the number present at 200,000.

It was the fourth demonstration against negotiation with ETA since the first cease fire was announced 18 months ago.
