The incidents came despite a last minute change of venue in Mataró.

Despite a last minute change of venue last night, from the university to a local hotel, a Partido Popular rally with Angel Acebes in Mataró was once again attended by dozens of Catalan independence activists.

There were angry scuffles and the PP General Secretary had to be escorted back to his car by the regional police.

The leader of the Partido Popular in Cataluña, Josep Piqúe, yesterday accused the Socialists of toning down the behaviour of certain groups, following the heckling and egg throwing incidents suffered twice by the leader of the PP Mariano Rajoy, who is campaigning in the region.

The comments come after the Socialist José Montilla commented that the hostile reception received by Rajoy was ‘the clamour of the people against the policies of the PP’
