The government claims the law will lead to a more just and balanced societyThe Cabinet has today approved the draft of the new Equality Law and it will now go on to parliament for final approval.
Deputy Prime Minister,
MarÃa Teresa Fernández de la Vega said it was a law which would contribute to making a more just and balanced society. She described it as for both men and women as it dignified them both.
One of the main parts of the new law is the obligation on businesses to draw up plans to balance the wages of men and women in the company wage rounds.
Companies will have 8 years to reach a 40% quota of women on their boards. It will also lead to parity in electoral candidate lists, and more paternity time.
The Minister for Employment and Social Affairs,
Jesús Caldera, said the new legislation would better share the responsibilities in society which he now said were badly divided, and he claimed it would generate richness and productivity in business.
The Cabinet also decided to create the commission which will decide where Spain’s nuclear waste cemetery will be located.
The temporary storage facility for highly active waste will be discussed by the inter-ministerial commission which will decide on the technical and environmental requirements of the centre.
