More than 700 have arrived in a single 24 hour period

More than 300 immigrants arrived on the Canary Islands on Saturday morning, following 415 on Friday, and taking the total number of irregular arrivals to more than 700 in less than 24 hours.

A cayuco boat with 132 on board arrived on El Hierro, and another two, one with 80 and another with 109 on board, came ashore on Tenerife. The Prime Minister, who is on Lanzarote on holiday, has visited two of the immigrant reception centres.

Meanwhile the President of the Canaries, Adán Martín, has called for children to also be subjected to repatriation. Under current legislation children who arrive here irregularly are allowed to stay. Martín has called for far greater resources and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero said that he had noted the criticism from the Canaries President.
