Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra has been Regional Presaident since 1982 and suffered a heart attack in 2005
The man who has been the face of politics in Extremadura since 1982, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra, President of the regional government since that date, has announced his retirement from politics.

Over that time he has kept an overall majority for the Socialists, but he told the press on Tuesday that to present himself again would call for ‘enthusiasm, strength and health’.

He suffered a severe heart attack in Madrid in November 2005, and at the time he said that the event was a life-changing one.

A meeting will now take place on Wednesday between the regional Socialist party executive to discuss his successor, but already the frontrunner is considered to be the current Regional Councillor for Health, Guillermo Fernñandez Vara. The party will officially announce the new candidate list on October 14.
