It will take at least two years to draw up a detailed map of radiation levels
Juan Antonio Rubio, Director General of CIEMAT, the Centre for Energy and Environment Investigation, has told EFE news agency that technicians will start work in mid-November on the first phase of the operation to clean up radiation pollution in the Palomares area of Almería.
The first step, he said, is fencing off the 10 hectare area affected by the two bombs which fell to ground in 1966 when a United States B52 crashed into a refuelling plane mid-air. Rubio estimates that it will then take the team of 20 technicians at least two years to draw up a detailed three-dimensional map of radiation levels.
A team from the United States will have responsibility for instrumentation, laboratory analysis and technical assessment, following an agreement signed with the US Energy Department three weeks ago.
