flash floods caused flooding on the Costa del Sol, with cars swept away from a normally dry river bed

The heavy rains in many areas of Spain on Tuesday hit hard in Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía, but especially on the Costa del Sol.

There was flooding in Málaga city, where a normally dry river bed in the provincial capital swept ten parked cars down to the beach.

The western part of the province was worst hit, most of all in Mijas, which saw rainfall of 157 litres per square metre. Residents of the Molino Urbanisation were temporarily evacuated to Las Cañadas sports stadium amid fears that the Fuengirola River could burst its banks. La Vega industrial estate was also evacuated when a nearby stream overflowed.

Shops and businesses in Marbella, which saw 134 litres of rain per square metre, and San Pedro Alcántara were also affected by flooding. Firemen rescued a number of people trapped in their cars by rising water levels elsewhere in the province.

The rain across Málaga province yesterday has been described the wettest day in the province since 1989.

Elsewhere in Andalucía, a river burst its banks in Los Barrios, in Cádiz province, causing 24 people to be evacuated from their homes. Other houses were evacuated in Botafuegos in Algeciras.
