The Iberia Airbus 319 had a mixture of politicans and fare paying passengers on board
The first commercial flight between Madrid and Gibraltar took place at 1205am on Saturday morning.
It follows the recent three party agreement between Gibraltar, Spain and the U.K.
The plane landed on the rock five minutes early at 1255 with a passenger list of Spanish politicians, journalists and businessmen, making them the first time that representatives of the Spanish executive have been on the rock in 50 years.
There were 60 normal paying Iberia customers on the flight, carried out by the Airbus 319, Ciudad de Baeza.
Iberia are now running a daily service between Madrid and Gibraltar.

I was glad to be part of history as i watched the 1st spanish aircraft land
on my home ground, its good to know that now i can fly direct to madrid and
hopefully to other spanish destinations instead of driving for miles. Its
sad to see how politicians are disputing with one another over who controls
what, they are like little children with a new toy GROW FOR GOD SAKES!!!

Its hardly the first flight, BA used to run a service LON>MAD>GIB and
back in the seventies.
And David Jackson flew in from Malaga in the morning in a passenger aircraft.
However, nice to see some normality after all the nonsense.

Agree with my mate Mr Prescott in Gib about the squabbling politicians,
time they grew up.
Hopefully Gib will have flights from other destinations soon.

Thankyou very much Ian for your kind thoughts, the new airline FLY
GIBRALTAR looks promising although now there seems to be plans for them to
buy a new airline service??? And on a different note lets hope that with
this NEW AGREEMENT the border starts making impressive results and starts
cutting down a bit on the Queues

Most news media erroneously reported the story.
I was the first to land piloting my personal aircraft into Gibraltar at 0900 Dec 16 2006.
I achieved this by pressurizing both governments and the RAF to abide by the agreement reached in Cordoba Sept 18 2006 providing for lifting of airspace restrictions on Civil aircraft flights. Had I not been succesful, only Iberia and BA would have been allowed to transit their airspaces for the forseeable future. It was recorded by the RAF as =AN HISTORIC FLIGHT EVENT .
The RAF and I beleive it is probably the first ever none commercial aircraft to effect this international flight.
