Volver and Alatriste favourites for the Spanish Goyas

The 21st edition of the Spanish Goyas film awards will be held in January

The Spanish films ‘Alatriste’ by Agustín Díaz-Yanes , ‘Volver’ by Pedro Almodóvar, ‘Salvador’ by Manuel Huerga, and the Mexican film ‘El Laberinto del Fauno’ by Guillermo del Toro, are the four films nominated for Best Film in the 21st edition of the Goya’s – Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars.
Alatriste has 15 nominations, and Volver has 14, making them the great favourites this year. El Laberinto del Fauno has 13 and Salvador 11.
Penélope Cruz is among the nominations for Best Actress, with Maribel Verdú, Marta Etura and Silvia Abascal, and two non-Spaniards, Daniel Nrühl and Viggo Mortensen compete in the Best Actor category with Spaniards Juan Diego and Sergi López.

Antonio Banderas is nominated as a candidate for Best Adapted Screenplay, and rock singer Bebe is nominated as Best Newcomer Actress.

In total 133 Spanish films which opened between Dec 1st last year and 30 of November this year will compete for the prizes.

The gala will be held in the last week of January.
