Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, speaks to the conference today, Sunday

The Andalucian Socialist Party are holding their congress in Marbella over the weekend, and had sustainable development at the top of the agenda.

While in the Basque Country and Cataluña the owners of empty property face fines, in Andalucía the Socialists are proposing tax breaks for those who rent out empty accommodation.

The party also wants to establish a fund from which local town halls can draw, in order to expropriate land for the building of more council housing.

A party document on the increase in building along the coastline makes no mention about the demolition of those buildings already put up illegally.

The Marbella conference today sees the visit from the Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega.

She, and Regional President, Manuel Chaves, gave their support to the Socialist candidate for Mayor of the town, Paulino Plata. They said he would ‘dignify’ the town.

Chaves had some words of comfort for those owners of illegal buildings in Marbella. While saying that the judge’s decision must be respected, he added that there would be no vendetta of demolitions and the ‘good faith’ of the purchasers would be considered.
