Abu Mazen will meet with the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition during his visit
The Palestinian President,
Abu Mazen, has arrived in
Madrid today for a meeting with the Prime Minister,
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, with the
Middle East at the top of the agenda.
Spain has her own proposals for how peace may be obtained in the region and Zapatero will be keen to promote those.
Mazen is understood to be likely to give Zapatero details of his meeting with the
Hammas chief of policy,
Jaled Mechal, with whom he is currently trying to negotiate a government of national unity.
Abu Mazen was welcomed at Barajas airport at 7pm this evening by the Spanish Foreign Minister,
Miguel Angel Moratinos, and the two men then set off for the Moncloa Palace.
Tomorrow Abu Mazen has a meeting planned with the leader of the opposition,
Mariano Rajoy.
