The new Spanish law on Animal Welfare will include fines for those who ill-treat domestic pets.
Fines of upto 100,000 € can be imposed on individuals or companies.
The new law was approved in the Cabinet on Friday, and controls the transport, upkeep and conditions of animals on farms and in medical research.
The most serious abuses will be considered as unjustified ill-treatment where the 100,000 € will apply.
The law makes no mention of bullfighting however, or the use of animals in traditional Spanish fiestas.

And about time. Pleaseing to see that finally those most vulnerable to the
torment, brutal handling and cruelty metered out by humans will have some
redress- however who will enfore and police these new regulations and
laws?
And WHY is there no mention of the pain and suffering of animals in Spains
bull fighting and fiestas?
The ruptation of Spain as a place where animals are treated like crap,
where pain and endless suffering is a day to day occurance for non human
animals is maintained with or without new laws.
Sounds to me like these new laws are lip service and piece meal- there so
long as blood thirtsy Spainards can still have a slice of fun at the
expense of an animal. Doesnt do the reputation of Spain and its
inhabitants much good. The place is still as cruel and nasty as it was
before!
Hmmmmm

I think a good TV show on how to treat annimals, or maybe a big brother
house with annimals where people vote by sms who is best with annimals, or
an annimals lovers idols show with a winner, would have have a much bigger
impact. Or a show that highlights what it is to take care of an annimal and
what you get back, and that an annimal is not something you buy for
christmas and dump after summer. Just a thought. I want 5% of the sms
income. It will be a hit show. Just a thought. Actually a free tip. Dogs
and cats are being flown out to other countries to get a better life every
day. Why can they not have a better life here? A law against extremes won't
change much.
A TV show can do a lot more.

Dear Editor,
Any upgrading of law to protect animals is welcome but what we are really
waiting for is the news
regarding a ban on bullfighting.
Then we may really congratulate the people and lawmakers in Spain.
Yours sincerely,

If it is cruel to HARM AND HURT domestic pets...why is it OK for Spaniards
to INFLICT SUCH HORRENDOUS PAIN ON BULLS AND HORSES IN THE BULLRING. The
matador can choose his game THE ANIMALS CANNOT. I despise you for the
pain you inflict on the one type of animal and praise you for at least
conceding that ANIMALS DO FEEL PAIN. tAKE THIS FURTHER PLEASE

what happens in spain is entirely the concern of their inhabitants , not
yours
dont hide your dislike for spain under the facade of antibullfighting
we dont need anything from you, we have our own population of foreign
inmigrants. and a glass of orange squash will be increasingly more
expensive for you each year. the days of the capricious tourist are over
now
the seventies are very far away

He's kind of right. You can rant on in English to each to other and nothing
will change. Get together, form an assosiation, learn Spanish and get
involved. What about:
www.addaong.org
www.rspca.org.uk (international)
www.wspa-international.org/
Or find your local animal welfare establishment, write to your MEP, local
MP, if you have a lawyer friend, ask them to get involved....
I'd personally like to see sports like 'Matador boxing', or 'calzando el
calzador'.

well done for the new law, but i cannot believe it has excluded bulfighing
or the animal sacfrifice that is apauling. animals should be treated fairly
and what you do to those animals in spain is pure torture you should have
it done to u instead!!

It is too bad that the law failed to ban bullfighting and failed to protect
animals used in Spanish fiestas. I would think that Spain to demonstrate
real compassion and humanity would take the lead on this issue. Obviously,
this is not so - they are still in the dark ages of blood lust for
entertainment.

Whatever may happen in Spain is only the concern of spanish nationals , not
yours , please spare us your potential moral superiority which on the other
is nowhere to be found, try to learn a bit of spanish for a change , dont
badmouth us and dont give yourself airs of wealth , because here things
are more and more expensive for you each year UK percapita income 36000US
dollars spain 310000 , by the way try to learn some spanish for a change
since if you dont speak it , lazybones , your grandkids will . 400 millions
and counting

Please confirm the law regarding keeping farm animals in houses.
I have a house opposite me where the owners are keeping a cockeral but do
not live there full time. Every morning at about 5.30am-6.00am the animal
will start to crow waking my family up,it then continues for approx 3 hours
and then starts agian in mid afternoon.
Is this acceptable for somebody elsies animal to disturb my families sleep
pattern. My son attends school and struggles to get adequite sleep because
of this.
