A march along the Granada coast in tribute to thousands who fled the civil war

A march seven decades later is retracing in reverse part of the route followed by the thousands of refugees who fled from Málaga to Almería
Some 100 people took part in a march along the coast road from Almuñécar to Nerja, in Málaga province, on Sunday, in memory of the 120,000 refugees who fled along it during the civil war.

Many who began the long walk from Málaga to Almería seven decades ago died along the way, subjected to constant air and sea bombardment by Nationalist forces.

Some who walked the route in 1937 were there to retrace part of their steps on Sunday.

This tribute to those who died on, and survived, ‘La Desbandá,’ ‘The Exodus,’ is taking place in reverse: the first stage was the previous Sunday, on a march from Motril to Almuñécar.

The third and final stage of the tribute march is next Sunday in Málaga province, setting off from Nerja and ending in Torre del Mar at the monument which was erected in memory of the thousands of people who were part of La Desbandá.
