The suspect now in custody was seen attacking it with a metal bar

The famous Gaudí dragon which guards the entrance to the Parque Güell Park in Barcelona has been seriously damaged by vandals.

Police have arrested a 22 year old from L’Hospitalet de Llobregat in Barcelona province, who they say attacked the sculpture with a one-metre long metal bar. He is named as David P.C., and was seen carrying out the act of vandalism by witnesses.

Police are trying to locate others who were with him at the time and who may also have been involved. Reports describe them and the detainee as punks.

The damage to the dragon is said to be serious, and mainly affected its head and torso.

There's a culture among young men in our neighbourhood that is the opposite of creative- large scale graffiti is tolerated. They can only be destructive.

But I can see them being trained from an early age by their parents- "go on, do what you want, you're the Prince", with inevitable results.

Yep, I think the parents have some blame, but so does the culture. Reminds me of Don Juan Tenorio...there is a history and pride in bad behavior among men called machismo with few consequences and it is pervasive in Spanish society. There is punk crime and then there is white collar crime..as in corrupt lawyers, judges, etc. Maybe the punks were letting off steam and modeling parental behavior? Or metaphorically, the behavior of our leaders who are defacing the nation?

It seems as if this person wanted to get famous but in a wrong way. I hope we have soon a photo of it.
It is very sad that he did not realised that the dragon also belongs to him. By attacking the dragon he was attacking himself. I hope we soon have more news about the ones who commited this crime against Humanity.

Stupid Punks.

If they had balls they'd hit real targets instead of sculptures.

That is what I think too.
It is of cowards to hit somebody, in this case the dragon, that cannot defend itself.

Gaudi is completely overrated. Destroying art is absurd, and I wouldn't condone it, but Gaudi is a quirky footnote in archetectural history, and worth forgetting.

I hope his punishment includes having to take a year of Art Appreciation and History coursework.

Clearly, this idiot didn't know he was destroying someone's medieval version of "graffiti".

About the comment of hank that Gaudí is completely overrated I just assume, as it cannot be otherwise by the way he seems to be so sure about what he is talking about, that he has visited all the main monuments of Gaudí. Furthermore I assume that he knows perfectly well why the buildings of Gaudí look so different to others.
Anyway, fortunately Unesco considers
Gaudí buildings part of our World Heritage.
I wonder how many people who had been in the terrace of Casa Pedrera consider
it worth forgetting.
Gaudí is clearly underrated and comments like the one above show that.

let either the punk himself or he`s parent pay for what he destroyed!

How sad that such a beautiful work of art should be damaged by mindless thugs. Glad I got some lovely photos of the dragon in December when we visited Barcelona for the 2nd time - simply cannot get enough of Gaudi and all the other treasures this wonderful city has to offer.

A disgusting act by a mindless thug. Even for those who are not fans of Gaudi must recognise this as a disgraceful act of vandalism. It makes me sick.

Ryesca, why should it be Germans or Greeks??? I wonder what your explanation will be... 'Cause at this point, you seem as brainless as those punks who did this.

Quirky maybe, but surely no footnote. His art both has nature in mind in structure, construction and form, and used highly revolutionising techinques at the time.
Cheer up, be a little silly Hank. It's okay to say that a gingerbread house is pretty, even though it looks nothing like the concrete box you yourself live in.

come on, you can not seriously belive that half of Barcelona would dress themselves in black to mourn an old fart that did nothing worth noting?

How very saddening. I think anyone with the idiocy to destroy a masterpiece should be thrown straight into jail.

i know i'm like 4 months late to this story, but i'd just like to point out that graffiti has nothing to do with destroying other works of art (as some comments seem to suggest). graffiti is as legitimate as any other art and most graffiti artists might paint over public property, true to the anti-establishment vein of the movement, but would never gratuitously destroy a piece of art.that being said, i think the fact that these kids were punks is not an explanation for nor a cause of their actions. there are nice and civil punks, who respect great cultural monuments, and there are idiotic punks, just like in any other human group. this article seems to suggest that being a punk makes it somewhat more probable that you destroy everything you see, and this is not the case. on the other hand, being very drunk most certainly is a significant factor.
