It happened near Villena and four sheep were also killed

A 60 year old shepherd died at 6,40 pm last night when he was hit by a train in Villena as he was trying to save his flock.

Four sheep also died in the incident which resulted in the line being closed for an hour afterwards. It happened at la Vereda de las Fuentes, just one kilometre outside the local station.

Police think the man was trying to get his sheep of the tracks when he was hit by the Altaria train travelling from Alicante to Madrid.

A local witness said the same shepherd lost 30 of his sheep when hit by a train in the area a year and a half ago.
