José Luis RodrÃguez Zapatero attended a rally in VitoriaThe Prime Minister,
José Luis RodrÃguez Zapatero, has made his first trip to the Basque region since the failing of the ETA cease fire.
He called for respect for the
Ley de Partidos, that’s the law under which the political wing of ETA has been declared as an illegal organisation, and offered five proposals for the future of the region.
He said a political agreement between the parties in the region was needed, and said that the Socialists would make it their task to find one.
The basis of such an agreement must be the total rejection of violence.
His five principles are:
1. To speak of peace you have to forget violence
2. To stand in the elections you have to respect the Ley de Partidos
3. There has to be a plural agreement between the parties
4. The Socialist party will search for such an agreement, but will not make a forward step while the violence continues
5. His determination to find peace remains intact
The Prime Minister also referred to the start of the case for the
March 11th Madrid Train Bombings. Zapatero voiced his total respect for and confidence in the judiciary and for the rest of the state institutions, and he called on everyone else to do the same, and especially to show the maximum respect and confidence in the police.
