Correos using radio to track packages
By h.b. - Mar 13, 2007 - 4:53 PM

One million Euro has been invested in a new tracking system for packages

Spanish postal company Correos is to use a system of computer chips embedded in packets to identify their location using a radio identification system.

The chips are embedded in the RFID stickers placed on the items, and a trial of the system has shown that 10,000 packets were identified correctly.

The company has invested one million € in the project, and now it will be used firstly in the company’s messenger service, before being extended to other items.

Correos currently handles 5 billion items a year and delivers post to 19 million addresses a day.

I sent a card with urgent stamps on it, paid the extra fee for getting them put on and sent it from here to Ireland. I sent it on Tuesday morning (of last week)and it has still not arrived.
Is a radio going to help get letters etc. there quicker?

Many items I have sent express never arrived to their destination and were returned to me 3 months later, sometimes, and other times, completely disappeared. I have no confidence in Correos. I no longer send any mail to Spain.

We have constant issues with packages arriving to our home here in Spain. Most recently, the postman dropped the slip into our box to say there was a package (we were in, he didn't try to deliver) and then the post office told us for the next three days that we couldn't have it because the postman hadn't brought it back yet.

The disorganisation is insane, I can't see anything other than serious management changes making a difference.
