The Marbella Management Committee began disciplinary proceedings the day Rafael del Pozo returned from months of sick leave after his arrest in the Malaya case
The Management Committee which now runs Marbella has suspended the former Chief of Local Police, Rafael del Pozo, from his job and has started disciplinary proceedings against him. His salary has also been withdrawn.
It came on Wednesday, the day del Pozo was due to return to work after being signed off sick since his arrest in the Malaya case. Disciplinary proceedings could not take place during that time: it’s understood that they’re related to preserving the image of the force in the town. The Management Committee instead opted for demoting him as Police Chief, and appointed Rafael Mora as Acting Chief of Local Police.
Del Pozo has been arrested on three occasions in the Malaya case and is currently out on bail of 20,000 €. He’s charged with failure to stop a crime, influence peddling and illegal possession of weapons, amongst other charges.
He’s also implicated in another case related to alleged leaking of exam papers for the local police.
Another Malaya suspect was meanwhile in court on Wednesday, in the case brought against the ex-Mayor, Marisol Yagüe, for non-payment of building work on her house. She was on the stand for more than two hours.
Yagüe told the court that she did not pay the invoice – almost one million € - as the renovation work was not up to standard. She also said the constructor, Alberto Piñana, from the Copasur construction company, overcharged her, and that she had only given him the work as they were friends.
Eighteen witnesses who were involved in the work are called to declare in court on Thursday.
Yagüe is also implicated in a related criminal case, where she and two other people linked to the Town Hall are accused of using municipal materials for the work on her home.
