Poems by Spanish poets will be seen on the metro and buses in
Washington next month, as part of a European literary project to commemorate the birth of the
European Union fifty years ago.
Entitled
‘European Poetry in Motion,’ it’s supported by each of the 27 EU member states and the European Commission, and was launched on 25th March, the day when the
Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957, and what would later become the European Union we know today was born.
It’s supported in the USA by the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority, the DC Commission for Arts and Humanities, and the Poetry Society of America, amongst others.
Each of the 27 member countries is supplying five short poems, to be displayed in both their original language and in English.
Spain’s Ministry for Culture has selected works by five poets who died during the 20th century: ‘Canción - Song’ by Juan Ramón Jiménez, Rafael Alberti’s ‘Si mi voz muriera en tierra – If my voice should die on Earth,’ ‘Te quiero – I love you,’ from Luis Cernuda, ‘Palabras para Julia – Words for Julia,’ from José Agustín Goytisolo, and José Hierro’s ‘Nada – Nothing.’
A web page with additional information about each of the poets from the 27 countries is currently under construction.
