The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has announced a local and regional election campaign ahead of the May 27 poll ‘without the insults and exaggerations of the Partido Popular’.

Speaking at a rally in Huelva on Saturday, the Prime Minister claimed that the opposition had no ideas or proposals, and highlighted his recent legislation against the discrimination and marginalisation of women.

Zapatero said the Socialists offered progress and social cohesion in Spain, and a war against poverty and climate change outside Spain.

‘Most Spaniards want a Government which makes social laws’, he said. Recent economic growth was down to the efforts of the workers and businessmen, better education and the incorporation of women and immigrants into the workplace, 'in an ordered and legal way, which creates richness', he said

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? But what will he do with the million or so new "immigrants" who will be laid off when the present "down-turn" in the building sector fully rears its ugly head? I hear they're looking for pick-pockets in Altea, bag-snatchers in Calpe, car thieves in Benidorm. Oh yes, they'll be plenty of work for all those millions of new immigrants.
