The reptile escaped from a local crocodile farm

A Nile crocodile which escaped from a crocodile farm in Jerez, Cádiz province on Sunday, has been safely recaptured and returned to the farm.

The reptile was found by officers of the Civil Guard nature protection branch, Seprona, three hours after the emergency call went out late on Sunday morning, and was caught with the help of a farm employee.

It was found lying on the banks of a local watercourse, which further downstream, flows through the Dehesa de las Yeguas in Puerto Real, a countryside area which is popular for family outings at weekends.

The Jerez farm has 1,300 Nile crocodiles on its land, a species which can grow as long as six metres. This particular specimen was 1.5 m long.
