José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero made an optimistic statement to the Stock Market today
The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has presented his Government’s report on the economy for this year, and as might be expected it makes optimistic reading.

The Prime Minister said that the economy grew by 4% in the first quarter of the year and by the end of the 12 months growth will average more than 3.5%.

He also forecast an increase in productivity, one of the weakspots in Spain, as well as further reductions in inflation.

He made the presentation in the Stock Market building in Madrid – it’s the first time that a Spanish Prime Minister has done so in this way, following examples set in the United States and Japan.

He said Spain would confirm her place as the 8th economic power in the world, and described 2006 as ‘the best economic year of the democracy’.

But despite all the optimism Zapatero admitted that there were important challenges to be met, including improving competitiveness and the balance of payments.

Best economic year for the corrupt, but not for the people who bought into the real estate scams. What a bunch of bs!
