The association, which aims to protect the interests of European citizens in Spain, describes Valencia property laws as abusive
The foreign residents association ‘Ciudadanos Europeos,’ whose stated aim is to protect the interests of European citizens in Spain, has recommended against buying property in the Valencia Region until what it describes as its ‘abusive’ property laws are changed. It refers to the Valencia government as the ‘main perpetrator and defender of the urbanistic abuses against foreign and Spanish owners.’

The association says in a recent report entitled ‘Urbanistic Abuse’, that they believe the situation is correctly reflected in the ‘reports of the investigating commissions of the European Parliament:’ the Petitions Committee report, which was approved last week, and which is harshly critical of real estate development in Spain.
Ciudadanos Europeos says that ‘in the present situation we cannot recommend anyone, foreigner or Spaniard, to purchase a property in the Valencia Region until its abusive property laws have been profoundly changed, as proposed by the European parliament.’

The Ciudadanos Europeos website - www.c-euro.org The non-profit association was formed in 1992 following the Maastricht agreements, and works towards the integration and participation of Europeans living in Spain.

I appreciate your article. I know of dozens of cases where people got totally desperate about arbitrary treatment by powerful building magnates and promoters who have a tight hold on the respective town halls - mere puppets on a string and on clandestine payrolls.
I too wanted to just live in peace in Spain; still do; but until Spain wakes up to a fair reality and respect of, at least, basic human rights - no way to buy here!

I'd rather buy a house in Zimbabwe. At least there the government(?) is honest enough to tell you that they're going to steal your property. In Spain they smile and say "you should be grateful," as quoted by one, Manuel Sanchez, manager of Residencial Virgen de las Nieves, who, when asked what he thought about a British couple having to pay €69,000 in development costs for work he was doing, also said that "it was their own fault." What was their fault? Buying a home in Spain?

If anyone has Ecky Ropohl's email address, would you email him and give him mine. I would like to reconnect with him again, which has been several years.

Thanks,
