Jairo Miguel has been bullfighting in Latin America for two years
A 14 year old Spanish bullfighter has been seriously injured after being gored in the ring in Mexico.
Jairo Miguel was advertised as the youngest bullfighter in the world when he first went to Mexico two years ago, reportedly to escape a ban in Spain on bullfighters who are under 16 years of age. Since then children bullfighters have seen an increase in popularity in Latin America.
He suffered the severe injuries after being gored in the thorax and dragged by the bull some distance in a fight last Sunday. The goring missed his heart by just two centimetres, but split one of his lungs in two according to reports. He is however expected to survive his injuries.
The manager of the bullring in Aguascalientes where the incident happened, Juan Carlos López, has told the press that children even younger have taken part in bullfights there, though he decline to specify their ages.
There are some reports of 12 and 13 year old fighters in Mexico.

I agree with rachel and pepa we should have a law for everything. we should
stop all sports because there is a risk of injury and ban all of our kids
from being involved in any sports at all.

I don't know anything about the rules of Mexican bull fighting, but the
problem that I have is that the bulls are killed during the fight.
Fight the bulls, but not to death, unless it's the death of the matador, for he, in essence, is the one in charge in terms of choice, and not the bull, who is merely responding to instinct.

A kevlar vest would reduce the potential for injuries (esp with children),
but the real problem lies with the inhumanity of the sport of Bullfighting
and the laxity of Mexican laws protecting children.

I am so tired of people and the "Protect the Kids". Kids can make choices
and understand consequences as well as anyone at any age.

I am glad this kid could provide entertainment to some folks in Mexico,
it's just unfortunate that it was as the expense of his health. Who cares
about the rules of bull fighting. Last time I checked, bulls were not
extinct animals. The kid's stupid for fighting. Don't tell me he did not
know what he was doing when he left his own freakin' country to fight

The question is, who is the bull-y? Seems like most identify with the
bull..who is lured into the ring, then attacked and taunted. And being a
bull-y/matador is admired by some, and/or considered good sport..which is
why we glorify violence and those who perpetrate violence. It's the macho
thing..no wonder so many women get killed by their "mates". No wonder kids
are growing up to be matadors. Is being reactive (to cruelty) such a bad
thing? Maybe it is needed.
