Spain’s Minister for Defence, Carme Chacón, left the Sant Joan de Deu hospital in Esplugues de Llobregat on Friday afternoon with her newly-born son Miquel in her arms, and accompanied by her husband, Miguel Barroso.
The Minister thanked the media for their interest in the birth of her son and said that both she and her son were well despite the shock of the birth coming earlier than expected.
‘He has a good appetite’, she said, adding that there are some things in life you cannot share, such as the sensation of breast feeding your child.
The Minister of Defence gave birth on Monday and will now share her maternity leave with her husband, but said she would also remain in touch with events at the ministry. She will take only half her maternity leave, and grant the remaining eight weeks to her husband. Some observers in Spain have seen that decision as advice from the Minister for working mothers.
