Two twin sisters have met each other by chance after 28 years on Gran Canaria. A medical error in the incubator room at birth in the old Nuestra Señora del Pino Hospital in Las Palmas separated the twins in March 1973, but they got to know each other 28 years later when a friend of one of them met the other sister in a shopping centre and confused them as they were ‘peas in a pod’.
The hospital interchanged a third baby which was born three days later, but handed to the parents of the twins.
The twins have preferred to remain anonymous, according to the El Mundo newspaper, but are said to have the same walk, express themselves identically and have the same look, but neither knew she had a twin sister. The fact was confirmed by DNA testing in 2004, and now the twins are demanding three million € in compensation from the Canary Islands government.
The administration says it will pay 700 € compensation if the judge rules that there had been medical negligence causing moral damage to the defendants as has been claimed.
