Days old baby abandoned in Madrid confessional

A baby, no older than a few days, an in good health, has been left abandoned in a confessional box of a central Madrid church.
The child was found in the church of Santa Teresa y San José, close to the Plaza de España. Dressed in pyjamas the child had been left with a bag which contained nappies.

A local tramp who was begging at the doors of the church heard the baby crying at 1130 yesterday morning and then found the child in the confessional.

Emergency services have taken the child to the Niño Jesús hospital and police will now try to identify the mother.
