The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor acting in the Astapa corruption case based in Estepona Town Hall, Juan Carlos López Caballero, has told the El País newspaper that three months after the case broke, there still remains ‘hundreds of people to go before the courts’ in the case including witnesses and those facing charges. For that reason he agreed with the judge’s decision not to grant bail to the ex Mayor, Antonio Barrientos.
The judge, Isabel Conejo, has now also called a cousin to Antonio Barrientos, who remains at the centre of the allegations, together with the promoter of a local shopping centre, Aurelio Martín Simón, who manages the Carrefour Hypermarket in Estepona. He is called in connection with plans for a new commercial centre, called La Lobilla, touted earlier as the largest in Spain.
