National Court judge, Baltasar Garzón, has concluded that he is competent to investigate the disappearances of people during the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s rule.

It comes after he asked several institutions and associations last September for lists of those who vanished at the time, and now considers that the crimes denounced by the Association for Historical Memory in December 2006 can been heard in the National Court.

Cadena Ser radio station says an official announcement will be made later today.

However the Prosecutors Office has already indicated that it thinks such cases should not be investigated by the National Court, but rather by the courts in each locality affected.
