A group of 22 hikers has been rescued when lost at over 2,000m height in the Sierra de María.
Among the group was a 74 year old man, José S.S. from Calasparra, who died from a heart attack.
The group was made up of residents of Calasparra in Murcia and from Petrer and Elda in Alicante, and some of them were said to be expert hikers. They were found on the 27th of December in the area of the sierra known as ‘La Burrica’ after having lost their way in dense mist and suffering temperatures of minus 13.
Guardia Civil mountain rescue groups came upon the lost hikers with the help of a local shepherd and after a three hour trek. The 21 and the body of the dead man were taken to the health centre in María where several received treatment for hypothermia.
