Barajas Airport in Madrid reopens after being closed by snow

A heavy snow fall has surprised many in Madrid today and has brought traffic and travel chaos. The N-IV main road from Andalucía was closed as the new settled, and long delays have been seen in the M-30 and M-40 ring road.

The capital is reported to be almost isolated by road with 390 kilometres of hold ups and four main routes into the city blocked.

The trains are running, but RENFE has suspended its punctuality price promise as AVE high speed trains have reduced speed from 200km/hour to 160km/hour.

Barajas Airport was closed for five hours by the snow, the first time it has ever been closed because of the weather. Despite the re-opening early Friday evening at the time the only access possible currently to Barajas was by metro. There were 1,205 flights programmed Friday at Madrid.
