A Spanish study has revealed that tobacco smoke is 60 times more toxic than traffic fumes.

‘Tobacco smoke is not just a bother, it’s a risk to health’, said the President of the National Committee for the Prevention of Smoking, Rodrigo Córdoba, after seeing the report drawn up by the health department of Barcelona City Hall.

The study looked at the number of micro-particles of 2.5 micros of less in size in bars which allow smoking and in the street.

Bars in Madrid and Barcelona were used in the study and the result was that outside on the pavement 30 micro grams of particles were found per cubic metre, while in the bars levels were 60 times higher at 2,000 micro grams.

The study confirms similar findings from an Italian team.
