Alicante City Hall is cracking down on street prostitution in the city centre. They are working on a new local ordinance which will increase police presence in certain areas and allow greater control over the hostels used by local prostitutes.
The hostels will be required to apply for a nightclub licence, in place of the accommodation licences under which they currently operate. Other measures include municipal programmes to help women who work as prostitutes to find other, legal, work.
Businesses in the city centre say the women are brought in from the Vega Baja and return there after their night’s work. Very few of them are Spanish nationals, they say.
