The so-called integrated sewage water treatment system for the Costa del Sol will not be completed until the year 2012.

The idea, to ensure perfect bathing quality and clean water along all the beaches of the coastline of Málaga province was first announced nearly 40 years ago, but still remains to be completed.

Minister for the Environment, Cristina Narbona, who was in Málaga last weekend, said nevertheless that her department had met its responsibilities in the province on the matter, and had moved ahead in the recycling of water, used for the washing of streets or watering of golf courses.

But the reality is that new treatment plants come online only this year in Benalmádena, Fuengirola and also inland in Ronda.

Problems still also have to be resolved in some areas of the eastern Costa del Sol.
