The choreographer and flamenco dancer, Rafael Amargo, has broken weeks of silence on the controversial Carnival Queen Gala which he produced as part of the carnival celebrations in Santa Cruz de Tenerife this February.
The production, which local councillor, Hilario Rodríguez, said ‘did not reflect carnival,’ was met with boos from the crowd, and hundreds of complaints. The Town Hall said at the time that they were studying how they could legally pay a lower fee than that agreed to Amargo, and were looking at taking legal action for damages.
Amargo defended his work in an interview broadcast on Telecinco television on Saturday night, and criticised the Town Hall for giving the company insufficient time to rehearse. He is said to have made allegations that the Gala scandal served to cover up ‘other things’ which were happening in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Amargo said the Town Hall has yet to pay him his 300,000 € fee for directing the production.
