Saturday saw protests in 11 Spanish cities in demand for better housing and against real estate speculation.
The events were called by the platform ‘En Defensa del Territorio’, and attracted some 500 people to the largest rally in Madrid.
Spokesman, Jaime del Val, speaking in the Paseo del Prado, said that real estate speculation had become the most serious problem in Spain, and he demanded the Government take urgent action ‘to eradicate this problem because of the environmental, social, economic and political consequences’. He said better coordination was needed between central Government and the regions on the matter.
Other protests were held in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Murcia, Almería, Salamanca, La Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Marbella, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas. Some used the slogan ‘España es Marbella’.
In Murcia 10,000 people protested about the excesses of local development and plans to build 80,000 more homes in the region. The protestors blocked some main roads for four hours.
