A Spanish woman has discovered that her wedding, held in the town of Betanzos, A Coruña, was a fraud.
Her husband was already married, and the vicar performing the ceremony was in fact a 51 year old tractor driver from a nearby town. The Civil Guard says that some 50 people attended the civil wedding in a local hall.
The wife discovered that all had been a fraud while on the honeymoon in Tenerife, after her new husband had already started to take large amounts of money from her bank account.
The man was separated from his previous wife, but not yet divorced, and had set up the marriage to benefit from his new wife’s money. He has since claimed he had taken the money to pay for the wedding.
The husband and false vicar have been arrested and charged with fraud. Both have been granted bail.
The husband has a previous record for fraud.
