The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, speaking with the visiting President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, has insisted that there will be no more immigrant residency amnesties carried out in Spain.

Instead Zapatero said the Government would be studying measures to support the regrouping of the families of the immigrants and their children.

Immigration centred a joint press conference given by the two leaders in the Moncloa Palace yesterday.

Rafael Correa claimed his country was living a new chapter, and he hoped that many Ecuadorians living in Spain would soon be able to return home.

Currently some 500,000 Ecuadorians live in Spain legally, with some estimates of the illegal numbers of immigrants being as high as 700,000.
